Historically Famous Albertas

There are numerous Saints with the name Albert however the most memorable is Albert the Great., He was a thirteenth century Scientist who wrote many books on the sciences and nature.

Another St Albert, Albert Chmielkowski, was a Polish painter who lost a leg in an uprising against the Russians in 1863, when he was only 18 years old. He later joined the Third Order of the Franciscans (for lay men and women), and made his studio into a shelter for the poor and homeless, before becoming a tramp himself; he died in a hospice in Cracow on Christmas Day, 1916. He might be the inspiration for the 'Crisis at Christmas movement', now simply called 'Crisis' - an organization which helps the destitute all year round.
