Historically Famous Alexs

St Alexander of the Sleepless Ones may be an unwelcome but apt name for a baby. This Alexander was a fifth-century army officer in Constantinople. He was prompted to resign his commission and become a monk by the words of Jesus: 'If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me' (Matthew 19:21). Stories about his holiness and miracle-working were written down by one of his monks in Greek. The 'sleepless ones' were 300 monks who settled with him near Constantinople. Alexander divided them into six choirs to sing the divine office in turn - day and night so that they could be praising God ceaselessly, and watching faithfully for the return of Christ.
