Historically Famous Andres

There have been many Andrews who have been canonized or beatified but all take their name, of course, from the first disciple of Jesus. Andrew was a fisherman who was called from his nets to become 'a fisher of men', bringing with him Peter, his brother. Along with Peter and John, Andrew became one of Jesus' closest disciples. Like most of the apostles, the legends about his life after the Crucifixion are very colourful and most improbable. It is thought, however, that he also was crucified, on an X-shaped cross, in Patras, Achaia (Greece). According to legend, Saints Rule and Theneva later took Andrew's bones to Scotland, obeying the voice of an angel which told them to take his relics 'to the ends of the earth'. Apparently, this revived Andrew; all three built St Andrew's church, and he became Scotland's patron saint, as well as the patron of Russia and Greece
