Historically Famous Anettes

It might be said that if St Anne had not existed, Christianity would have had to invent her - so important are grandmothers in the natural order of life. St Anne was the grandmother of Jesus, at least according to the apocryphal Protoevangelion of St James. Although nothing certain is known about her life, she can be seen - together with Mary and Jesus - in numerous Renaissance paintings. The account of Anna and her husband Joachim's miraculous conception of Mary may be strongly related to the Hebrew story of Hannah's conception of Samuel; in the same way, Mary's song - the Magnificat - echoes Hannah's song of triumphant joy. The mystery of Mary's birth has become known and honoured by many Christians, especially Roman Catholics, as the 'Immaculate Conception'.
