Historically Famous Barbaras

No one knows if, when or where Barbara really existed. The legend - a seventh-century romance - tells of a beautiful girl who was imprisoned in a tower by her own father, Dioscurus, in order to keep men - especially Christian men - away. But a doctor managed to get into the tower to teach her about the Christian faith, which she immediately accepted - much to her father's fury. Although Barbara survived the torture of the authorities, her father cut off her head, upon which he was struck by lightning and completely incinerated. whether true or simply a legend, Barbara became a well-loved patron, particularly by those who worked with explosives or those in need of help during thunderstorms.
