Historically Famous HelenasSt Helen is always thought of as the woman who found the Cross on which Christ was crucified. Born in about 255 in Drepanum, Asia Minor, Helen was probably just an ordinary, poor girl until she happened to attract the attention of a Roman officer stationed there called Constantius. She went with him to Rome and gave birth to a son. More was to come, however, for Constantius became Emperor, and' tried to - divorce his humble wife, banishing her from Rome. When Helen's son Constantine inherited his father's empire, Helen was brought back again and crowned as an empress. Constantine won a famous victory after having had a vision of the Cross of Christ; after that, Christianity became legal in the Roman Empire. Helen embraced the faith and went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land where she studied the ancient sites and founded many churches, as well as helping the poor. Whether or not the story is true about her finding the Cross buried near Calvary, and finding the nails and seamless robe, her faith, devotion and charity are undoubted |
