Historically Famous Clarries

Clare, born in Assisi, Italy, scandalized her wealthy family - just as St Francis had - by taking her faith too seriously and running away from them to live with Francis, his fellow monks and 'Lady Poverty' for the love of God. Of course, the free Franciscan life on the road was not suitable for a lady of that time, and Clare had to be content to lead her own Order of 'Poor Ladies' in the church of San Damiano, with a Rule written for her by St Francis. Although she and her sisters could not travel with Francis, they shared his devotion to Christ, and insisted on living in the greatest poverty. They embroidered church vestments and linen, and gave their enclosed lives to prayer. Clare herself seems to have been as loved by her sisters as Francis was by his followers. Franciscan austerity was never imposed on other people, but it seems to have given freedom and joy to anyone who dared to risk it.
