Historically Famous Clements

The Clement from whom all other St Clements take their name was the fourth Pope, coming after Peter, Linus and Cletus. St Irenaeus tells us that '[Clement] had seen and consorted with the blessed apostles'; he may be the Clement mentioned in Philippians 4:3, but we do not know very much about his life. What we do have is his letter to the Corinthians, dealing with the troubled affairs of their Church. Legends abound about him being sent to the marble mines of Russia and eventually martyred by being tied to an anchor and thrown into the sea. It is said that his tomb on the sea bed, made by angels, can be seen once a year at exceptionally low tides.
