Historically Famous FannysFrances Xavier Cabrini was the first citizen of the USA to be canonized, although she was Italian, born in 1850. Her first Order was one of missionary nuns in Lombardy; she was then sent to America by Pope Leo XIII. Once there, Frances founded an orphanage for the children of Italian immigrants at West Park, and hospitals in New York and Chicago. She continued working throughout the American continent in Nicaragua, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Costa Rica, until her death in 1917 in Chicago. |
