Historically Famous HidesHilda was a noblewoman of Northumbria, christened at the age of 13 with her great-uncle, King Edwin, in 627. Her vocation to the religious life came relatively late, but when she was 33 she was installed as Abbess of a convent in Hartlepool by St Aidan. Shortly after this, Hilda founded a double monastery at Whitby which became one of the largest and most important religious foundations in Britain. The Venerable Bede writes about her and some of the eminent people who lived there, induding St John of Beverley and Caedmon, believed to be the author of the first English religious lyrics. An historic conference took place at Whitby in 664 to decide whether the English Church should follow the Celtic or Roman Church calendar. Apart from being formidably efficient and wise, Hilda was also very lovable, according to Bede |
