Little is known of St Emma, who died in 1045, apart from the sad circumstances ofher life. She was happily married to the Landgrave of Friesach, Austria, and had two sons, but they were murdered and her husband died while away on a journey. Unlike many of the who later became saints, widowhood was not delicious freedom but a terrible blow to Emma. She later founded a double monastery in Carinthia, Austria
