Historically Famous Janies
Jane is one of the feminine forms of John, so a Jane or Joan might take one of the many St Johns for her patron. There is, however, a very attractive St Jane whose life might be an inspiration for any woman because it combined marriage and motherhood with great holiness and administrative skill. Jane Frances de Chantal (1572-1641) was a well-born frenchwoman of Dijon. She married when she was 20, and had four children; unfortunately, after eight happy years, she was widowed. She later began to develop her spiritual life under the direction of St Francois de Sales. Three years later, he asked her to become the Superior of a new Order for women which would foster the vocations of widows like herself, or women whose age or health would not permit them to join other, more austere orders. Therefore, Jane became the foundress of the Order of the Visitation; it grew so fast that there were 80 houses by the time she died. Jane was the grandmother of that bubbly woman of letters, Madame de Sevigny; according to St Vincent de Paul, Jane was 'one of the holiest people I have ever met on this earth' .
