Historically Famous Jennys

Joan is the name of several French saints, the most famous of whom is, of course, Joan of Arc. This illiterate teenage peasant girl was prompted by heavenly voices, those of St Michael, St Catherine and St Margaret, to crown the Dauphin at Rheims and to lead his troops into battle. When Charles VII's courage failed, things went against the French. Joan was captured by the Burgundians, who were allied with the English, and sold to them for a 'show trial'. It is often forgotten, however, that her canonization was not for her patriotism or her courage, but her faithfulness and obedience to God. She was only 19 when she chose death by burning rather than having to collude with political lies.
