Historically Famous JocksThere are at least 64 Johns in Roman martyrology, as well as many other fascinating characters like the Cure d' Ars, and St John of the Cross; the number of different forms of the name show how popular it was and still is. But it was from St John the Apostle and Evangelist and, to a lesser extent, St John the Baptist, that all Johns take their inspiration. St John the Evangelist was the brother of James, son of Zebedee and Salome, and perhaps even the cousin of Jesus. He was certainly one of the three disciples who were called to be with Jesus during his Transfiguration and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, and tradition has it that he was 'the disciple whom Jesus loved', mentioned in his Gospel. It was he who received Jesus' charge to look after Mary, his mother, and he who, as tradition has it, gave us the majestic fourth Gospel, as well as other letters in the New Testa- . ment. It is said that he lived for many years on Patmos, Greece, and later at Ephesus, Turkey, where.he died John the Baptist has a rather different reputation from that of the gentle old man of Ephesus. Luke's Gospel account certainly portrays him as the cousin of Jesus, but he seems to have been a rough and ready man. As a baby in the womb, he greeted Jesus, and became the voice crying in the wilderness: 'prepare ye the way of the Lord', as foretold in Malachi 3: 1. His life baptizing people in the Jordan was as dramatic in its ending as it was at the beginning when an angel appeared to his father. He was imprisoned, and beheaded during Herod's birthday feast at the whim of Herod's illegal wife and her daughter, a dancing girl. |
