There are at least 64 Johns in Roman martyrology, as well as many other fascinating characters like the Cure d' Ars, and St John of the Cross; the number of different forms of the name show how popular it was and still is. But it was from St John the Apostle and Evangelist and, to a lesser extent, St John the Baptist, that all Johns take their inspiration. St John the Evangelist was the brother of James, son of Zebedee and Salome, and perhaps even the cousin of Jesus.
