Historically Famous Josephines

Little is known about St Joseph, the carpenter who was betrothed to Mary and became the earthly father of Jesus. Legend has it that he was an old man when he married Mary, who was already pregnant. He was reassured in a dream by an angel who proclaimed his betrothed's chastity. Certainly, the Gospels are silent about him, although the tradition that the marriage was never consummated is difficult to explain in the light of the brothers of Jesus mentioned later. What is not in contention, however, is the care he took both of mother and child and his obedience to God's will.

Other St Josephs include Joseph of. Arimathea, the devout Jew who offered his own expensive rock-tomb to shelter Jesus' body; he is thus patron saint of undertakers and cemetery staff. He has always had a place in English affections because of the legend that he came to Glastonbury after the Resurrection, bringing the chalice used at the Last Supper (Arthur's Holy Grail), and planting his staff, which grew into a flowering hawthorn tree. His symbols are a thorn tree, a box of ointment, a vase and the Holy Grail; his feast day is celebrated on 17 March. A more disorderly but engaging St Joseph was the young Franciscan friar of Cupertino, Italy, who was only ordained by mistake, since he was thought to be mentally retarded. He may have been, but he was full of irrepressible joy and a strange ability to foretell events, which eventually persuaded the Church hierar chy that he was a saint. Rather more alarmingly, St Joseph became notorious for his astonishing habit of levitating, especially when moved by Christmas carols. Although this attracted many visitors, his superiors were not best pleased. He is now, appropriately enough, patron of astronauts and all involved in aviation. His feast day is 18 September
