Historically Famous JustinsJustin was one of the first Christian philosophers. He was born in 100, in Samaria, to a Greek-speaking family. Justin travelled to Alexandria, the great city of learning, where he studied many different philosophies but was eventually baptized a Christian. He wrote many treatises, some of which survive, and travelled to many countries, preaching the Gospel (as a layman), to pagans and Jews. On his second visit to Rome, he was denounced to the authorities and executed. Justina was to prove that rightminded women could be equally brave. She was a beautiful pagan princess who was martyred on her way to join the Bishop of Padua. Legend has it that it was her knees which left two dents in the stones of the bridge there, as she knelt to pray for help during her arrest. |
