Historically Famous Loiss

St Louise, a compatriot of King Louis but born 300 years later in 1591, was a wealthy young widow. Her confessor, St Vincent de Paul, saw potential in her for great spiritual development rather than mere charity, and Louise began to work with the poorest of Paris. Gradually, she attracted other women to her and she founded a new Order, the Daughters of Charity, 'whose convent is the sickroom, and whose cloister is the streets'. Their work spread throughout France, but it was their Hotel Dieu in Paris which inspired Florence Nightingale to develop her own hospitals 300 years later.
