Historically Famous Malinas

Although there were three beatified Magdalenas and a St Magdalene (or Madeleine), the inspiration for this popular name was, of course, Mary of Magdala. There is great controversy as to whether or not she was the prostitute who anointed Jesus' feet (Luke 7:37-50) and/or Mary of Bethany. What is written of her is that she had 'seven devils', and that after her healing by Jesus she became one of his followers. Not only did she wait at the foot of the Cross with Mary and the other women, but it was she to whom the risen Christ appeared first; it was also to her that the news of the Resurrection was first entrusted. This meant that Mary Magdalene was often known as the 'first Apostle'. In the West, where she was believed to have been both the penitent prostitute and the contemplative Mary of Bethany, she became one of the most loved and revered saints of the Middle Ages.
