Perhaps the most attractive St Margaret was the gentle and strong-willed English woman of noble birth who escaped to Scotland after William the Conqueror defeated the English royal house. She married Malcolm, the rather brutal King of Scotland, and bore him several children. Her personal influence affected the Scottish court for good, and she also persuaded the Church to conform to Western disciplines.
