Historically Famous MichellesIt may seem strange to venerate an archangel along with once-mortal saints, but although the feasts of Raphael and Gabriel were added during this century, Michael has always been a popular 'saint'. Very many churches are dedicated to him; especially those on hills, since a vision of him was seen on Monte Gargano in Italy, between 492 and 496. It is not only in the Christian calendar that Michael is so important: he is also honoured by Jews and Muslims as one of God's greatest angels and captain of the heavenly host, continually fighting the Devil (or his human representatives). The association of Michael with fighting comes from the verses in Revelation 12:7-9 about the great war in heaven, but he is also considered to be a special protector of the sick in the Eastern Orthodox Church. There is a tradition which says that Michael receives dying souls and weighs them in his scales; hence his patronage of grocers. |
