Historically Famous Minas

St William of York was also rather an interesting mixture of the pragmatic and spiritual. Hewas appointed as Bishop of York in 1140, but there was a great deal of fuss because his enemies accused him of simony (buying or selling Church appointments) and sexual laxitY. Pope Innocent II upheld his cause and he was consecrated, but seven years later he was deposed by Pope Eugenius III, on the advice of St Bernard of Clairvaux among others. He must have had redeeming qualities, however, for after spending some years in ascetic seclusion, Pope Anastasius IV restored him to his See, to the joy of his flock.

William is such a popular name both in England and in France that it is hardly surprising that there are many listed in the calendar of saints, as well as a sad roll of beatified men who were tortured and executed during the Reformation in England. It is difficult to choose anyone of them rather than another, but St William of Gellone seems to have been an attractive character, simply because he combined outward 'masculine' virtues in order to be the ideal Christian knight, with more inward qualities that led him to found an abbey near Aniane, to which he retired as a monk.
