Historically Famous NeddysThe first King Edward to be canonized was the unfortunate lad who, about a 100 years after Edmund met his death, was murdered at the age of 16. Whether or not this was really a martyrdom, people reported many miracles happening about his grave and he was canonized soon after. His feast day is on the 18 March. Edward the Confessor is chiefly remembered as the gentle but wise and effective king who succeeded to the throne of England in 1042. Even before his death, he was venerated for his holiness; it was of him that it was first said that to touch the King would cure scrofula, 'the King's evil'. Westminster Abbey is the beautiful church that we know today because of Edward's love for it.. He refounded the small monastery, as it was then, and greatly enlarged the church where he, at his own wish, was buried on his death in 1066. |
