Historically Famous Patricias

St Patrick has become synonymous with Ireland, the land to which he came as a missionary bishop in 432. It is rather surprising considering that Patrick was not Irish but a Romano-Briton, and his first experience of Ireland was as a slave, when he was captured and sold into slavery for about six years. After escaping to France and being consecrated by St Germanus in Auxerre, Patrick returned to Ireland where he travelled about, teaching and working miracles, as well as writing. One of his best-loved traits was that of teaching the truths of the faith using homely, simple images; his example of the shamrock (or cloverleaf) representing the mystery of the Trinity has become universal, as well as his own personal symbol. He founded the great church at Armargh in 444 (where Oliver Plunket became bishop over 1000 years later), and died in 461.
