Historically Famous RichardsTo drop the chalice during Communion must be every priest's nightmare, but St Richard of Chichester once did and apparently he miraculously did not spill a drop. Richard was born in 1197 and studied at Oxford, Paris and Bologna. He became the Chancellor of Oxford University, and later served as chancellor to St Edmund of Abingdon, who was then the Archbishop of Canterbury. Trouble began when St Boniface of Mainz and King Henry III quarrelled over the right of appointment to the See of Chichester. Boniface appointed Richard, known to be a strong-minded and ascetic pastor as well as a scholar, whereas Henry had his own favourite, one of his own court who was, nevertheless, 'deficient in learning'. Richard had to wait for two years before the Pope upheld his claim, but once he took possession of his See, he proved to be a very effective and much-loved bishop. |
