Historically Famous RositasSt Rose of Lima (1586-1617) was the first Americanborn person to be canonized, although she was the daughter of Spanish parents who had come to settle in Peru. She was born in Lima, and became a Dominican Tertiary at the age of 20. Although she led an outwardly simple life, growing flowers and doing embroidery in order to help the family's finances, Rose inflicted terrible tortures on herself for fear of vanity, and seemed to endure strange mystical experiences which were investigated by the Church. Nowadays these are often considered to be signs of psychiatric disorder rather than holiness. Nevertheless, Rose was canonized not for these self-destructive traits but for her sympathy for the poor and slaves, the sick and the Peruvian Indians. |
