Historically Famous Suzettes

One St Susanna may have been the beautiful niece of St Caius, Bishop of Rome, who was sought after by the Emperor Diocletian's friend, Maximian. When she refused him, she, her father and two uncles were all executed. Whatever the truth of the story, there was a Susanna who was martyred and buried in Rome. The popularity of this name in Britain is probably due more to the heroine in the apocryphal story of Tobit, but there are several saints called Susanna, including another martyr from Armenia who married a Russian prince from Georgia and who was killed by Persians in 473.
