Historically Famous TimmiesSt Paul writes to Timothy with such obvious and avuncular affection that it is hard not to feel it too, although we know only a little about him. Indeed, Paul ends his second letter to TImothy with a moving appeal for his company. From Acts and Paul's letters we know that he was Jewish through his mother, Eunice, but had a Greek father. Although Eunice and her mother, Lois, were Christians and had brought TImothy up as a Christian too, Paul himself gave TImothy instruction in the faith, and also circumcised him, in order to show the Jewish Christians that Christianity was not radically anti-Jewish, but a fulfilment of everything they believed in. Later, TImothy was given charge over the Church at Ephesus and is thought to have been its first bishop. Some say that he was beaten to death for his opposition to the pagan festivities in honour of their goddess and great tourist attraction, Diana. |
