Historically Famous Tollys

The original Bartholomew was one of the 12 disciples, possibly even the Nathaniel mentioned in John's Gospel, but nothing definite is known about him. It is said that he took the Gospel to Armenia where he was martyred by being flayed alive. His name was given to several Italian saints, and also Bartholomew of Fame, a Yorkshireman. This Bartholomew was ordained in Norway, but returned to Britain and spent 42 years on Fame until his death in 1193. His feast day is on 24 June. It is also worth mentioning the remarkable Italian nun, Bartholomea Capitanio, who founded the Sisters of Charity of Lovere in Lombardy, with Vincentia Gerosa. Bartholomea wrote several books on the spiritual life, and is still remembered as a strong and unselfish woman. She died at the age of 26. Her feast day is on 26 July.
