Historically Famous Tracys

St Teresa of Avila and St Therese of Lisieux are two of the most extraordinary women of the Church, and both of them were quite different. Teresa was a witty, energetic woman of the world who nevertheless became one of the greatest contemplatives. She worked with St John of the Cross and others to reform the Carmelite Order in which she had become professed as a nun. She lived during the time of the Counter-Reformation in Spain when there was a great flowering of learning and discipline in the Roman Catholic Church amidst the careless laxity of many of the clergy and religious houses. Certainly, much of that is to Teresa's credit, and she was the first woman to be honoured as a 'Doctor of the Church' for all her writings on prayer and the inner life. Conversely, her letters and the descriptions of her that survive show us a fascinatingly contradictory saint who was impatient with 'stupid nuns' and yet humble about her own intellectual abilities; an ecstatic visionary who distrusted the supernatural phenomena which occurred around her; a brilliant cook; and someone who was determined to lead those who would follow her into a life of strict austerity and discipline
