Historically Famous UrsasApparently, Ursula was a British princess who refused to marry a pagan suitor until, playing for time, she had made a pilgrimage to Rome with 11,000 virgins. The required companions were eventually found and Ursula set off with her entourage to Rome, where she met the Pope. She was assured in a dream that she would be martyred on the return journey and would therefore avoid the threat of marriage; she told this to the Pope who, also keen for martyrdom, then joined her. When they reached Cologne on the return journey, they met the pagan suitor who was now converted and alsoanx ious for martyrdom, and there were some Huns who were happy to oblige. Historians believe that some women seem to have been martyred at Cologne before the late fourth century, so maybe this story has a high degree of truth in it. Sadly, Ursula is no longer on the official Roman calendar, but she has given her name to an Order of nuns, as well as many other women, and she and her companions are immortalized as 'the eleven who went up to heaven' in some interpretations of the song, 'Green grow the rushes-O'. |
