The most common use of 'Valerie' for English speakers is as a girl's name, and must refer back to St Valeria, who was supposed to have been the wife of St Vitalis, and the mother of St Gervase and St Protase. She and her husband are honoured as martyrs, although nothing is known for certain about them.

In France, however, it is St Walaricus, or St Valery, who is honoured. Walaricus was a fifth-century monk who began his religious life at Luxeuil and then set out as a missionary to northern France. He later settled down and became an abbot at Leuconaus; he died in 620. It is said that he was specially invoked by William the Conqueror who wanted fair winds for his foray into England in 1066. Perhaps his obviously efficient intervention in this matter explains why he is still so well thought of on the other side of the English Channel, and so obscure to the English.
