Historically Famous VidasDavid is an Old Testament name, but its popularity is largely due to a Welsh saint, Dewi, known to nonWelsh speakers as 'David'. There are other canonized Davids, notably a Scottish king of the twelfth century, but it is St David of Wales who is the best known. This David is reputed, in some historical accounts, to have descended from King Arthur; he was certainly revered all over the Celtic region. He became the first bishop in South Wales, and founded a series of monasteries of extreme austerity - so much so that some accused him of being more in love with asceticism than Christ. His nickname ('the waterman'), may derive from the fact that his rule forbade the drinking of wine; the tradition that he ate only bread and leeks (hence the Welsh emblem) is apocryphal. |
