Historically Famous ZillasSadly, the legend of St Cecilia is now considered to be just another Christian romance. Perhaps, though, we should be thankful that this lady did not suffer the torments of being suffocated by the steam in her own bath, and then - when that proved useless - being left for three days to die of three sword strokes to her neck. The story is that Cecilia was a noble Roman Christian who vowed herself to virginity despite being married off to a man named Valerian. On their wedding night, she managed to convert him and he was subsequently martyred together with his brother and a friend before the authorities made their assault on Cecilia. Of course, it is Cecilia's connection with music that we are most familiar with. According to the story, it was through (or despite) the wedding music that Cecilia prayed to God for help, and she has become the muse of church musicians ever since. Whether or not there ever was a Cecilia is impossible to say. It may be that she was the wealthy Roman Cecilia who founded a church in Rome and was given an honourable burial there. At all events, the inspiration and the music are real enough |
