60th year Wedding Anniversary

60th Wedding Anniversary Gifts

60 years of marriage is a major achievement to be celebrated. Given the gravitas that rightly surrounds the 60th Anniversary the theme for this milestone is Diamonds. Therefore, you’ll also hear it called the Diamond Wedding.  This Wedding Anniversary does not have any Flowers associated with it.

With Diamonds being the world’s most prized gemstone it’s possible that a couple who have been married for six decades will also be highly valued within the family.

We see a lot of gift purchases for 60th wedding anniversaries especially when you consider how old both partners would have to be to be celebrating their Diamond Wedding

The 60th Anniversary is the first marriage year you can apply to receive a greeting card from Her Majesty the Queen that commemorates the event. You’ll need to apply at least 8 weeks in advance although we’d recommend 12 weeks to allow for the relevant checks to be carried out. Anyone from the UK or Commonwealth can apply and there is no cost involved. To apply please follow the instructions on the Royal website

There’s a saying for those who care celebrating the Diamond Wedding and that is “You must have married a right gem to celebrate the Diamond Anniversary”

Originally 60 years of marriage did not have the Diamond associated with the celebration. It was decided to celebrate Queen Victoria’s 60 years as monarch and it was designated as the Diamond Jubilee. This stuck and thus the sixtieth wedding anniversary became the Diamond Wedding Jubilee.

Lots of Folklore surround the Diamond gemstone. It is said that it can bind a relationship, bringing love and clarity into a partnership.

Furthermore it is said to enhance the love of a husband for his wife and is seen as a sign of commitment and fidelity which after 60 years I would have thought would be evident anyway!

Wedding Anniversary Etiquette – how?

Anniversary Celebration Parties and Gifts

We’ve been asked plenty of ‘how’ type questions and have repeated the regular ones below, if we have not addressed your concern then please email us via our contact page and we will endeavour to answer your question.

How do I ….

Q. I am making a anniversary speech/toast any suggestions

Q. How do I celebrate my Anniversary ?

Q. Helping a person plan an anniversary party?

Q. I am looking for information on the 75th wedding anniversary?

Q. How do I convey requests for money to the guests?

Q. We are renewing of our vows for our 50th anniversary, are there any do’s or don’ts?

Q. Would it be proper to put on the invitation RSVP or proper to enclose a response card?

Q. My mother wants to have an anniversary celebration and was told that it was not good manners to invite family?

Q. How long is the Longest Marriage on Record?

Q. I am making an anniversary speech/toast any suggestions

Yes, a few actually! One key thing that we’ve learnt whilst trying to find non derogatory jokes about wedding anniversaries for our web site (you’ll notice there is none on our site because we couldn’t find any!). Take great care not to include a joke which will slight/insult either partner. Remember it is both of them that are celebrating their anniversary and they should be able to enjoy it. If you do want to include a joke that may be considered risky make sure it is told in a third party i.e. I knew a couple who were married……

Q. How do I celebrate my Anniversary ?

Well, the first thing is don’t ignore or forget your Anniversary. This is the one day a year that is special for you and your partner.Traditionally celebrations often involve giving and receiving of cards and gifts that match the anniversary year being celebrated. Often these gifts are made of a specific material that symbolises the year being celebrated. To find your anniversary symbol select your anniversary via our anniversary by year page and all the details  including suggestions of ways to celebrate will be given to you.

Q. How do I plan a party

A. There are plenty of resources available such as books, web sites and videos that will detail how to plan a party, you could even employ a specialist party planner who will take all the stress of party planning away from you. We’ve expanded the answer to this question on our anniversary planning pages

Q. I am looking for information on the stones/metals and/or colours associated with the 75th wedding anniversary.

A. The 75th Anniversary has the following materials associated against it; diamonds, diamond-like stones, gold. Source; Chicago Public Library

Q. Money as an Anniversary gift ~ My sisters and I are throwing my parents a 30 year anniversary party.  My parents already told me that they do not want any gifts, but would prefer money.  How do I convey that to the guests?

A. It is difficult to ask for money on invitations to an anniversary celebration. I assume your parents have a specific goal for asking for money such as a holiday or a specific gift. If this is the case then it is best to use this fact. i.e. on the invitation state that your parents are saving for whatever.. and a contribution towards this would be gratefully received…. or the most appropriate gift….

Q.We are trying to plan a celebration and renewing of our vows for our 50th. anniversary, are there any do’s or don’ts to be consider, we  were married very young, so we are not really that old; still young at heart. Are there any suggestions for this  we would like to do it the proper way.

A. There is not a fixed way to have a 50th celebration and it can be up to you, the couple celebrating the anniversary, how you would like to celebrate. Even with your decision to renew your vows can be done in many ways from a low key celebration up to a re-creation of a full wedding breakfast.

Q I am have a 50th wedding anniversary celebration for my parents in February. I will be sending out invitations for this.  It will be an Open House at my parents’ home starting approximately  6 pm .  There will be food and beverages.  Would it be proper to put on the invitation to RSVP as to how many will be attending or proper to enclose a response card as to how many will be attending? — Even though it is an Open House event?   It would help in knowing how much food to prepare.

A. As you are having an open house I think that an RSVP would be most suitable.  Depending on your Social cycle it may be appropriate to put a note after the RSVP to say that it is to ensure that sufficient food is available

Q My mother wants to have an anniversary celebration and was told that it was not good manners to invite family.  This cannot be correct is it?

A. I’m not sure how this idea came about but it is not true. A lot of Anniversary Celebrations are arranged by the family especially ones above the 25th. Wedding Anniversaries can take the form of a intimate celebration for just the couple right up to a full recreation of the original wedding with a blessing service in church followed by a Anniversary Breakfast.

Q. How long is the Longest Marriage on Record?

In Australia the longest marriage on record is that of Wesley Arney (Wes) and his wife Vanetta who in 2003 celebrated their 79th anniversary unfortunately Wes passed away the same year. A brief news story on their marriage is available here.

In Britain the longest marriage on record was a couple from Bradford who celebrated their 87th Wedding Anniversary together in January 2012 (News story
here).

Important Modern anniversary gifts

The modern wedding anniversary gifts list are the same as the Traditional Wedding Anniversary Gifts List on what are viewed to be the major anniversaries e.g 25th Anniversary is Silver, 40th Anniversary Is Ruby and the 50th Anniversary is Gold on both lists.

Gift List Variations

We’ve listed the most popular theme/material first in the list above. If there are other themes or materials it’s because we have found references to these in different publications. Certainly there is no one definitive list.

What’s more there are a few variations with the traditional anniversary gifts list above which we’ve not included. Possibly the largest one being that for the first wedding anniversary. In the United Kingdom and Europe, the 1st anniversary traditionally used to be Cotton with the second year being Paper themed. Obviously this has now been reversed to follow the american traditional theme of Paper for the 1st year and Cotton for the 2nd year. We think the reason behind this is down to the world becoming a smaller place with use of modern technologies.

There are other variations on the traditional theme and again these tend to be local traditions, for example in Germany there is also a tradition to celebrate  the Copper Anniversary which is 12 and a half years or half way through a Jubilee (which is 25 years.) There is also a Vinyl Anniversary for when you have been married 33⅓ years. If you’ve not guessed already this is based upon the old gramophone records which played at 33⅓ revolutions per minute (rpm)

Important traditional wedding anniversaries

All the important and major anniversaries originate from this list. Indeed the 25th anniversary and 50th anniversary are the oldest known anniversaries being celebrated with symbols. With the 25th being called the Silver Wedding and the 50th called the Golden Wedding. These can be traced back into early European history.

Precious Gemstones – Anniversary Guide

There are two main types of gemstones, Precious and semi-precious. A gemstone is considered precious if it is rare or difficult to obtain, these particular stones often attract a high commercial price. A Semi-precious gemstone is classified as such by being more widely available that precious stones.

The most sought after precious stones are currently Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. However, more traditionally stones such as Opal, Pearl (although not strictly a gemstone) and Amethyst was once considered to be precious and extremely rare. Amethyst was considered to be extremely rare and precious going as far back as ancient Greece. However, During the 19th Century, large deposits of the stone were found in South America and has since been reclassified as semi-precious.

Today, we are going to tell you what anniversary a precious gemstone is associated with.

Diamond

Diamond is the traditional gemstone for the 60th, 70th and 75th Wedding Anniversaries.

Diamond is the most precious of stones, the stone demands a premium prices and has even sparked wars due to its rarity making many retailers not accept what is now known as Blood Diamonds .

Diamond is a favoured stone for engagements or eternity rings, most likely as it represents “virtue” however its first meaning was “courage” which came from the Greek word “adamas” which translates to ‘invincible’.

Ruby

Ruby is the traditional gemstone for the 40th Wedding Anniversary.

Rubies are deep red in colour and are found in deposits worldwide. Rubies demand a premium depending on the overall look of the stone, A deep red called pigeon blood red, transparent and a superior cut are the rarest and therefore extremely valuable. The stones carat (weight) also determines its worth.

Ruby is one of the best known precious gemstones, it also comes with a wealth of claims including making all obstacles in the path of happiness to melt away, it repairs broken friendships and can help improve memory!

Sapphire

Sapphire is the traditional gemstone for the 5th, 23rd, 45th and 65th Wedding Anniversaries

Sapphires can vary in colour such as pink and yellow, however the most popular and one of the rarest is the Blue Sapphire. Sapphires and known to be extremely durable and hard and are therefore sometime used in commercials items such as scientific equipment and components in wrist watches.

Although Sapphire is the gemstone for the 65th wedding Anniversary, it is traditionally known as Star Sapphire. A gemstone is considered a “star” when it has star-like properties within the stone, this is known as asterism. It is recognised by having a star shaped pattern when viewed with a light source.

Sapphire gemstones have long been believed to stand for devotion which as it puts in an appearance for the 65th wedding anniversary is rather apt.

Emerald

Emerald is the traditional gemstone for the 20th,35th and 55th Wedding Anniversaries

Emerald is a rich green in colour and like other precious gemstones is considered more valuable if it is a dark green with a transparent finish. Other lower quality stones will often be dark green but are completely opaque.

Emerald was once a favourite gift between lovers, as it was believed to lose its colour should either the giver or receiver become unfaithful. It is claimed to help with those who have weak sight and it used to be believed that if a serpent looked at an emerald it would become blind.
