Historically Famous Benedicks
As St Anthony the Great is known as the 'father of monasticism' as a whole, St Benedict (48O-c.550) is the father of that particular form we know so well in the West - the Benedictine Rule, still hugely influential in the Church today. Monks and nuns live, work and pray in monastic houses, while keeping alive the tradition of learning, the arts and hospitality. Benedict was an Italian, born to aristocratic parents, and had a twin sister who was also canonized as St Scholastica. His own monastery was founded at Monte Cassino in 547. Apart from his wisdom and moderation, Benedict was also known as a great healer and one through whom God would raise the dead.
