Historically Famous Frankys

Francis of Assisi was the first saint from which very many. have taken their names, although 'Francesco' was just a nickname. Born in 1181, Francis (or John) was dazzled not only by the courtly romances of France, but by chivalry and adventure too. However, his joie de vivre and imagination were caught up in a completely new adventure: that of trying to live the Gospel as it was actually written. It sounds simple but in medieval Italy it was revolutionary. Although Francis' family were Christians, they were not prepared to see their wealth given away impulsive ly. Francis kissed lepers, delighted in being mocked or even attacked, lived only on what he was given as alms, and took God's command to rebuild his Church equally literally: he found a small ruined church and began to restore it, stone by stone. The friars who joined him, the animals and birds who heard him preach, the women who formed his second Order of 'Poor Clares' and the many ordinary people who became Tertiaries all show how Francis' extraordinary gifts and determination to live the Gospel as perfectly as possible did, indeed, rebuild the Church in the twelfth century. He was the first saint to experience the strange phenomenon of the stigmata - Christ's wounds on the Cross - on his own body. The influence of Francis is still being felt in the Church today, especially where it works to protect the natural world or help the poor.

Other Names Day resources

Name days stem from celebrations or festivals held to celebrate Saints, these dates were chosen by the relevant church that had declared the person a Saint and as they were often only referred to by a single name then the festival became known as that particular name's day hence name day. The  popular custom of celebrating your name day is wide spread across Europe and the middle east it's rise can be traced back to people's desire to have the occasional party and with literacy being constrained to clergy and similar scribes then people would not know the date unless informed via this route hence if your saint name was being celebrated then why not push the boat out!
