Historically Famous Gilbertes
Gilbert of Sempringham is particularly interesting because he founded the only medieval Order which originated in England - the 'Gilbertines' - and also because he lived to the age of 106 at a time when the average life expectancy was about a quarter of that. Gilbert was born in Sempringham, Lincolnshire, in 1189 and became the vicar of the parish. A while later, when seven women asked him to write a Rule for them to live in community there, Gilbert initiated a widespread Order of men and women, lay and ordained, for work in hospitals and orphanages. Gilbert seems to have been a man of courage - he dared to help St Thomas a Becket in his quarrel with King Henry II and a man of humility as well, for when he went blind in his old age, he was content to step down as Abbot and live on in his community as an ordinary brother.
