Historically Famous Lens
A popular medieval saint in France, Germany and Britain, little is known for sure about St Leonard. A book written about him in the eleventh century (The. Life of St Leonard) recounts that he was a hermit who refused a bishopric and went to live in a forest in southern France. One day, King Clovis and his wife were riding through the forest when the queen, who was pregnant, unexpectedly went into labour. St Leonard gave them shelter and delivered the baby, and the king was so thankful that he granted him as much land as he could ride around on a donkey in one night, and a pardon for any prisoners he visited. Leonard built a monastery on the land he was granted, and many of the men freed by the royal pardon joined Leonard there. It is thought that his monastery also became a popular shrine for returning crusaders, especially those who had been taken prisoner and had invoked Leonard's aid for their release
