Historically Famous Lucilles
'Lucy' means 'light' and it may be for this reason that her feast day falls on the winter solstice. It may be, though, because legend has it that she plucked out her eyes and presented them on a plate to the man whose thwarted lust drove him to denounce her as a Christian. Whatever the truth of that story, it seems that Lucy was a beautiful young girl of Syracuse in Sicily, living in the third or fourth century. She accompanied her suffering mother to the shrine of St Agnes, where their prayers for a cure were answered. This miracle persuaded Lucy to consecrate her life to God and to give away all her wealth. Her fiance betrayed her, and she was cruelly tortured and executed. Lucy is a greatly loved saint of Sweden, and her feast day is celebrated with special food and processions of girls with wreaths of candles on their heads.
