Historically Famous Olvas

No one is sure if the story of the beautiful Christian girl from Palermo who was carried away by pirates to Tunis is true. Once there, she lived the life of a hermit, but so many Muslims were converted by her example of holiness and her power to work miracles that the authorities tortured and executed her. What is certain is that she is, perhaps oddly, venerated among Muslims at Tunis even today, and the mosque of the city is called 'Temple of Olive'. Her feast day is 10 June and she is often portrayed in art with a brazier and leaden ropes. Oliver Plunket was the last Catholic martyr to be hung, drawn and quartered at Tyburn in 1681. He was born in Ireland in 1629 and became Bishop of Armargh at the age of 40. He set about reforming the Church while trying to maintain good relations with the Protestant bishops but the political troubles in Ireland overwhelmed Christian principles. He was betrayed, tried and released, and then tried again - this time in London - where a corrupt court found him guilty and sentenced him to death.

Other Names Day resources

Name days stem from celebrations or festivals held to celebrate Saints, these dates were chosen by the relevant church that had declared the person a Saint and as they were often only referred to by a single name then the festival became known as that particular name's day hence name day. The  popular custom of celebrating your name day is wide spread across Europe and the middle east it's rise can be traced back to people's desire to have the occasional party and with literacy being constrained to clergy and similar scribes then people would not know the date unless informed via this route hence if your saint name was being celebrated then why not push the boat out!
