11-06-2000 | Feast Day of Barnabas, from the Hebrew, 'son of consolation'. Although Barnabas was not one of the Twelve, he is called an 'apostle' - that is, 'one who is sent'. Barnabas worked tirelessly to bring the Gospel to the people of the Roman Empire; indeed, his first mission was to be a companion to the newly-converted Paul (also called an apostle) when many Christians in Jerusalem could only remember him as the raging persecutor, Saul, who witnessed the stoning of St Stephen. We know from Acts that Barnabas was a Cypriot Jew, 'a good man, full of the Holy Ghost and of faith'. He accompanied Paul on his first missionary journey and is honoured as the founder of the Church on Cyprus. Barnabas was also the cousin of John Mark, the youngman who may have written the first Gospel. John Mark started out on the mission with them but disgraced himself - in Paul's eyes, at least - by wearying of the dangers. Barnabas, to his everlasting credit, took the part of the younger man and went back with him, although later he managed to reconcile the tWo. The Bible does not tell us what became of Barnabas, although tradition says that he was martyred at Salamis, Greece. Since Barnabas' feast day is the 11 June (the old style Midsummer Day), he has become the patron saint of haymakers and harvesters, as well as of Cyprus. |
11-06-2000 | Feast Day of Susanna, from the Hebrew, 'graceful white lily'. One St Susanna may have been the beautiful niece of St Caius, Bishop of Rome, who was sought after by the Emperor Diocletian's friend, Maximian. When she refused him, she, her father and two uncles were all executed. Whatever the truth of the story, there was a Susanna who was martyred and buried in Rome. The popularity of this name in Britain is probably due more to the heroine in the apocryphal story of Tobit, but there are several saints called Susanna, including another martyr from Armenia who married a Russian prince from Georgia and who was killed by Persians in 473. |
