- 2000 Feast Day of Raymond, from the Old German, 'strong or wise defence'. St Raymond of Penafort and St Peter Nolasco co-founded the Order of Our Lady of Ransom or the 'Mercedarians' in the early thirteenth century. This was a Spanish Order dedicated to rescuing Christians who had been taken prisoner by the Moorish occupation. St Raymond Nonnatus joined the Order and went to Algeria with ransom money for prisoners. When the money ran out, he offered himself in exchange for another man. This was agreed, but the Moors had not per haps reckoned with Raymond's determination to preach the Gospel, even in their own territory. Threatened by the flow of converts and determined to stop him, they found an effective but crude method: they put a padlock through his lips and put him into prison. His guards were either kinder or greedier. They kept Raymond alive, at any rate, until he was himself ransomed by the Order and was able to make the journey home, where he died in 1240. His nickname means 'not born', which refers to the story that his mother died in childbirth. Raymond was delivered from her body by a doctor, and he is thought to have a special concern for 'all women labouring of child'

01-09-2000 | Feast Day of Giles, from the Greek, 'a kid'. St Giles, a much-loved saint in Britain, is one of the medieval saints who are particularly associated with animals. The story goes that he was a French hermit living in Saint-Gilles, near Aries, before the ninth century. He used to be fed by a deer, who gave him her milk. One day, however, King Wamba of the Visigoths came crashing through the forest on a hunt; the deer sought refuge with Giles and sheltered in the saint's arms; the king tried to shoot the deer but found he had shot and wounded St Giles instead. Perhaps out of remorse, Wamba gave Giles land on which he subsequently built a monastery. |
